GOLF TERMINOLOGY

Shaft flex refers to the amount of bend in a shaft. Your shaft flex should match your swing speed.

A = Senior Flex

L= Ladies Flex

R= Regular Flex

S= Stiff Flex

 SHAFT FLEX POINTS

1.     High Flex Point shafts are for better players with faster swing speeds desiring a lower more penetrating ball flight

2.     Mid Flex Point shafts are for the average golfer with medium clubhead speed desiring a controlled ball flight.

3.     Low Flex Point Shafts are for the slower swinger desiring a higher  ball trajectory  for increased distance.

 SHAFT WEIGHTS

 Tour weight shafts are for very strong players with high swing speeds.

Standard weight shafts are for the better player with faster swings looking for added distance.

Light weight shafts are for the average player with average and faster swing speeds.

Ultra light Shafts are for players with good smooth even tempo swings looking for added Distance.

Shaft Torque is the resistance of the shaft to twisting.    Lower torque shafts like 2.5 to 3.5 are generally intended for the stronger and faster swing speeds. A torque of 4.0 to 5.5  or higher would be for average to slower swing speeds.

Shaft Frequency is the number of cycles per min (cpm) that a shaft vibrates when one end is held and the tip is oscillated in a special test machine.

                                  Club head Terminology

Loft is the angle of the slanted face of the club in relation to the ground.

Leading Edge is the leading or front edge of the sole of the club.

Trailing Edge is the trailing or back edge of the sole of the club.

Bounce Angle is the angle of the sole in relation to the ground in the playing position. The bounce angle means that the trailing edge is lower than the leading edge of the sole and keeps the clubhead from digging into the ground.

Offset is the position of the hosel in relation to the leading edge of the club.

Lie Angle  is the angle of the hosel in relation to the sole  and is the 2nd most important feature in clubfitting with the correct shaft being 1st.

Clubhead Volume refers to the volume of a driver head and how much water it displaces when submerged in water. The volume is measured in CC or cubic centimeters.

Cavity Back is a design that moves much of the weight to the perimeter of the iron.

Heel-toe weighting is when much of the weight is moved to the heel and toe of the club to combat off center hits and may make the club more forgiving.

COR coefficient of restitution is the ratio of the initial speed of the club head to the velocity of the ball as it rebounds off the clubface. The USGA limits the COR of driver heads in an effort to control distance.

VFT Technology is the varying of the thickness of the clubface of irons and drivers to control ball flight characteristics.

                                     Ball Flight Characteristics

Slice is when the ball flight starts left and curves back to the right of the intended target line.  Slice usually refers to an unintentional swing outcome.  Ball flight is the opposite for left handed golfers.  A fade on the other hand is the controlled flight of the ball from left to right.

Hook is when the ball starts left from the club face and continues hooking left and usually refers to an unintentional swing outcome.  Ball flight is the opposite for left handed golfers. A draw is a controlled flight of the ball that starts right of the target and gradually travels back left to the target or slightly across the target line.
