Secrets of Putting
Here I am in snowy Akron Ohio thinking about the start of golf league just a few weeks away. I’m concentrating on putting for these Newsletters because that’s all I can do now because of the crummy weather is to practice my putting in the family room. Would you believe that the last putt you missed wasn’t your fault! last year I attended an amazing seminar on putting and equipment. A putting robot was used in the demonstration to show how much an out of balance ball could make you miss a putt. First the instructor took an out of balance ball (a lot out of balance - but a brand you would instantly recognize) and put the heavy side up in the center of the ball aligned with the hole about 30 feet away. The robot was activated and the putt rolled down the green and went in the hole. Next, the instructor placed the heavy side to the left center and activated the robotic putter – the ball rolled down the green and missed the hole by two feet on the left!! Finally, the instructor repeated the experiment with the heavy side of the ball on the right – the ball rolled towards the hole and missed by almost two feet on the right side!! So there you have it! The out of balance ball can make you miss a putt by almost two feet. So what do you do about it? You balance your golf balls just like the Pros do. Buy some Epson Salts and dissolve some in a bowl of warm water until the ball floats and use a sharpie pen to mark the top of the ball that floats up. Next, take your finger and twirl the ball on one side and watch it until it settles and mark the spot that settles up. If the same spot rotates quickly to the top that means the ball is out of balance by quite a bit. The light side always comes to the top. The heavy is side is 180 degrees away. Discard balls that rotate quickly back to the same light point up. Mark the heavy side of the balls that aren’t too far out of balance at the top center aimed at the hole and the ball should roll true. There are spin machines that can balance balls but you have no way of knowing how far out of balance a ball is. A ball that is a lot out of balance could hit a spike mark or irregularity on the green that may rotate the ball slightly so that the out of balance heavy side could cause you to miss your putt. So it’s snowy and cold but you can balance your golf balls and get ready for the season to begin. My golf league has a rule that lets you change balls on the green and use a putting ball – so I have one that I balanced that I use all year long! Good luck with your putting….Woody P.S.
